Biog: Grandson of Sir Henry Wentworth Acland, 1st Bt. Acland of Oxford; served Sudan Political Service 1924-40; served WWII, North Africa; Brigadier, 1945; Honorary Colonel, Devonshire Yeomanry 1952-68; farmer; High Sheriff 1961, Vice Lieutenant Devon 1962-78.

Peter Bevil Edward Acland was born on 9 July 1902. He was the son of Alfred Dyke Acland and Hon. Beatrice Danvers Smith. He married Bridget Susan Barnett, daughter of Reverend Herbert Barnett and Mary Lethbridge, on 7 July 1927. He died in 1993. He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.

He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He was decorated with the award of Order of the Nile (4th class). He was in the Sudan Political Service. He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches and wounded. He was decorated with the award of Military Cross (M.C.) in 1941. He was invested as a Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1946. He gained the rank of Temporary Brigadier in 1947. He was commander of the 296 Field Regiment, Royal Devon Yeaomanry, Royal Artillery (Territorial Army) between 1947 and 1951. 

He was decorated with the award of Territorial Decoration (T.D.) in 1948. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Devon between 1948 and 1962. He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in 1953. He was invested as a Officer, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (O.St.J.). He held the office of High Sheriff of Devon in 1961. He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Devon in 1962. He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of Devon between 1962 and 1993.
