Sir James Reid, 1st Bt. (1849-1923)

Sir James Reid, 1st Bt. (1849-1923) studied medicine in London and then Vienna, the world centre of medical learning of the time. He was Queen Victoria’s personal physican for the last twenty years of her life, keeping copious notes. The Queen trusted him completely and often turned to him for advice as he was the soul of discretion and when asked difficult questions the Queen was known to reply “ask Sir James”.

After the death of Queen Victoria, Reid was awarded a pension of £1000 (approximately 500,000 zl in current value) per year for life. As well as being present in the last hours of Queen Victoria’s life, he was also present at the new king’s last illness in 1910.

Queen Victoria Jubilee Medal 1887 with 1897 bar;

Volunteer Officer’s Decoration;

Badge of the Order of the Red Eagle (Prussia);

Badge of Order of Ernestine (House Order of the Duchies of Saxony).

Biog: Physician-in-Ordinary to Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V; an Executor to Queen Victoria.
