Frances Dimond, Presenting an Image: Photographs from the Royal Photographic Collection Windsor Castle, Windsor, 1994, plate 28 (coloured version)

"This particular picture, which was produced in Lafayette's Glasgow studio, has been enlarged for framing.  It is a hybrid image, which started life as a photograph and has now become almost a painting.  It has been heavily overpainted and augmented; the vase of yellow roses and (apparently) the blue sky and curtains have been added to make the right hand side of the picture more interesting.  Superficially, it seems curious to add yellow roses where white (for the White Rose of York) would seem more appropriate in an engagement portrait; however the former might look too bright and the latter too dark, while the addition of yellow and green, to complete the spectrum, results in a colour scheme which is particularly well balanced...."
