Lara. Isidore de (pseud v. Cohen)

( London 9.8.1858 - Parijs 2.8.1935)

Eng. zanger en componist. Hij studeerde te Milaan compositie bij Mazzucato en zang bij Lamperti. Studeerde nog compositie b Lalo, te Parijs. Hij debuteerde als zanger en liederencomponist, doch wijjde zich weldra geheel an de compositie van opera's. Zijn belangrijkstre werken sijn The light of Asia (Covent Garden 1892), Amy Rosart (Covent Garden 1893), Moïna (Monte Carlo 1897), Messalina... De Lara was een geestelijk disciple van Massenet, doch zijn composities getuigen van gebrek aan diepte en van effectbejag. {Trans. English singer and composer. He studied composition in Milan with Mazzucato and song with Lamperti. He further studied composition with Lalo in Paris. He made his debut as a singer and composer of Lieder [art song], but he then devoted himself completely to the composition of operas. His most successful works are The Light of Asia (CG 1892), Amy Robsart (CG 1893), Moïna (Monte Carlo 1897), Messalina... De Lara was a fervent disciple of Massenet, but his compositions show a lack of depth and suffer from 'straining after effect' (i.e. contrivance)}
